Frequently Asked Questions

At North Star Behavioral Health, we know that finding the right mental health care can feel overwhelming. We’re proud to offer a thoughtfully structured, responsive, and collaborative environment - where your care is supported not only by your provider but by an entire team working together behind the scenes.

Whether you’re new to psychiatric care or simply exploring your options, here are answers to common questions about how we work:

  • As an established patient, you can request an appointment by calling us at 847-892-7300 or through our secure online patient portal. We make every effort to respond promptly and help you find a time that fits your schedule.

  • Yes. Our providers include board-certified psychiatrists and experienced therapists who specialize in different age groups - including children, teens, and adults - so we can match each patient with the right fit.

  • We are an out-of-network practice. Payment is due at the time of service, and we’ll provide a superbill statement you can submit for potential reimbursement. This model allows us to keep our focus on individualized, high-quality care - not insurance quotas or rushed visits.

  • Absolutely. We offer secure telehealth services for patients located throughout Illinois, making it easier to stay connected even when life gets busy.

  • The first visit is a consultation - a chance for us to understand your needs and determine if our practice is the right fit. For children and adolescents, the consultation typically takes place over two visits. We’ll always be honest about whether we’re the best place for you or your family.

  • Yes. Our psychiatrists provide thoughtful, evidence-based evaluations and follow-ups when medication is part of the treatment plan. We believe in shared decision-making and clear communication every step of the way.

  • We do. Some patients come to us for therapy, others for medication management, and many for both. We work together across disciplines to ensure you’re receiving coordinated, personalized care.

  • You’re welcome to leave a voicemail or send a secure message through our patient portal. We respond during regular business hours and always aim to be timely, respectful, and helpful - whether you’re reaching out about a medication, a follow-up, or just need clarification.

  • If you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. For urgent clinical matters, call our office and follow the instructions to reach your provider or their covering clinician. We always have someone available to help.

  • Your privacy is a priority. Information is only shared with your written consent or as required by law. Within our group, providers may consult with one another to ensure you’re receiving the highest quality care - especially during coverage or collaborative treatment.

  • Yes. With your permission, we’ll connect with your outside therapist, primary care physician, or other specialists to make sure your treatment is as seamless and supported as possible.

  • Yes. You can opt in to email or text reminders if that’s helpful. These are sent as a courtesy - ultimately, your appointments are yours to keep track of —-but we’re here to help keep things running smoothly.

  • One of the many benefits of joining a group practice like ours is that coverage is built in. When your provider is away, another trusted clinician is available for urgent matters. You’ll always know how to reach the right person - no guessing, no gaps in care.
